I have a question, and I ask this in all seriousness. What, do you think, are the interests of dust mites? Roaches? Fruit flies?

Kaplan writes, “The interests of a creature must not count less, just because it is a creature of a different group,” and I don’t disagree with that, but I recognize that all creatures do not have all the same interests, which leads me to wonder what *are* the interests of creatures like these, that are so different from myself.

I ask this on the same day that I escorted two fruit flies out of my house, rather than kill them…but I do wonder about their sentience, and I wonder whether it’s as wrong to kill them as it is to kill, say, chickens or pigs.

I know that some animal rights thinkers have said that when it comes to insect sentience, they don’t know, so they choose to err on the side of caution. I guess that’s what I try to do too.

But I worry that it’s not necessary, and may even be counterproductive, for the movement for animal liberation to tell would-be supporters they need to start escorting fruit flies outside as much as they need to stop eating animals and animal products.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, Norm. Thank you.

      Hi Jennifer,
You raise a serious question and I take it seriously. Overall, I don’t think I see it very differently than you do. But because it is such a thorny issue and because I do take it seriously, I am going to ask your indulgence for a few days while I put together some thoughts, which I will post here on the blog. In the meantime, if anyone else who reads this has views, concerns or questions about insects and other tiny creatures and their place in the animal liberation landscape, I would be interested in hearing them.
