The Cost of Compassion: the economic impact of welfare reforms

The Journal for Critical Animal Studies is a peer-reviewed online academic/activist journal published by the Institute for Critical Animal Studies. In the current issue, I have an article entitled: The Cost of Compassion: The Impact of Welfare Reforms on the Profits of Animal Factories and the Retail Price of Animal Products. In the article I argue, based on the work of some of the nation’s leading agricultural economists, that most welfare reforms increase the cost of producing meat, eggs and dairy. These reforms, I suggest, are not valuable solely because they ease the suffering of animals enslaved on factory farms. By raising the price of animal products, they can also contribute significantly to a decline in meat, egg and dairy consumption and to the eventual abolition of animal agriculture.
